As the Trump administration continues to implement across the board tariffs and tease even more tariffs, Tariffs Cost US announced the results from a new survey conducted by nonpartisan Morning Consult.

Maine voters across party lines are deeply concerned about the rising cost of living and the economic consequences of tariffs. The data show that most voters anticipate higher prices and disruptions to industries that are central to the state’s economy.

Findings include:

  • Four-in-five Maine voters (78%), including 65% of Republicans, and 84% of Independents, expect the cost of goods they purchase to increase because of tariffs.
  • Four-in-five Maine voters (80%) say they are trying to spend less money because of tariffs. Three-in-five (60%) are avoiding any major purchases for the same reason.
  • The tariffs on Canada are particularly unpopular in Maine, with voters rejecting them by a 26-68 margin. Overwhelming majorities believe these tariffs will harm U.S.-Canada relations (81%), disrupt trade (86%), and reduce Canadian tourism to Maine (80%).
  • Three-quarters of Maine voters (77%) expect communities along Maine’s coast to be hurt by new tariffs and/or a resulting trade war, including more than two-thirds of Independents (77%) and Republicans (66%).
  • Four-in-five Maine voters (84%) – including 90% of Independents and 70% of Republicans – find it very concerning or somewhat concerning that tariffs will slow economic growth.
  • Only 13% of Maine voters believe that foreign countries would be harmed the most. And, only 25% of Republican voters believe that foreign countries would be harmed the most.
  • Just 19% of voters support using tariffs as a long-term policy, while 73% say the focus should be on fighting inflation.

The survey was fielded March 22-27, 2025. The survey has a margin of error of 7 percentage points. To read the full finds of the survey visit: tariffscostus.com/tariff-survey-maine/.
