ICYMI: Inflation Rises as Trump’s Tariffs Hit Consumers
New data released this morning by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) confirms that the Trump Administration’s across-the-board-tariffs are increasing inflation. The report shows inflation ticking up in July, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising by 0.2% month-over-month and 2.7% year-over-year. Core inflation—which strips out food and energy—climbed to 3.1%, up from 2.9% the month before and marking one of the sharpest increases in recent months. Rising costs for restaurant meals, takeout, housing, used cars, medical care, toys, and furniture all contributed to the increase.
Since April, Trump has imposed across the board tariffs of 10%–50% on nearly all imports, with higher rates for dozens of countries and industries. The average tariff rate now tops 18.6%, the highest since 1933. While some businesses initially absorbed the cost, companies are starting to pass the increases to consumers.
